This past Monday night, freshmen all over Frisco poured out of their mother’s SUV’s in droves for their very first Young Life club; upperclassmen yelled and waved their arms at the cars pulling up letting them know they had come to the right place. Newly minted high school students were welcomed with open arms (and lots of high fives) into the worship hall turned-club room at Providence. After singing and laughing together, 200 freshmen and Team Young Life sat down and leaned in to hear the story of my first Young Life club and how similar it was to what they had just experienced.
At the end of the night, I read the kids the account of Jesus calling the first disciples in the Gospel of Matthew. In this account, Matthew recalls that the disciples that Jesus called dropped everything, quit their jobs and followed Jesus. Perhaps these men were eager for a new adventure or maybe they wanted out of their dead end jobs. Maybe they were just tired of the way their lives were going. The fact is, Peter and Andrew left it all in the boat and on the beach whenever Jesus showed up and invited them. Jesus, the staff, the volunteer leaders and Team Young Life are inviting them to the same kind of adventure that the first disciples embarked on so many years ago. I challenged the freshman to make their high school career worth something more than boyfriends, girlfriends, SAT scores, weight room records, parties, wins, and losses. Jesus has invited them on a fantastic journey; they just have to decide if they’re in.
I want to leave you with a few pictures from freshman club last week. I hope you enjoy them!
